What is Creative Dance?

Whether memorized or improvised, a dance should be an outward manifestation of the soul! A pre-cursor to contemporary dance, my creative movement course encourages self-expression and provides a structure for students to explore the basic elements of dance:

Body: breath, body parts, types of moves, axial movement, loco motor steps

Space:  shape, level, direction, size, focus, place, and pathway

Energy: the different energy qualities of movement include the attack (sharp or smooth), weight (heavy or light), strength (tight or loose), and flow (free flowing, bound, or in balance).

Time: beat, accent, speed, duration, rhythmic pattern

During each lesson, students will improve their coordination and technique through structured improvisation, and still have time for planning and presenting their own choreography. Some classes will be "story dance" days, in which I use fairy tales and other stories as a framework for instruction--imagine your child creating a "dusting the house" dance as Cinderella, or "dancing around the campfire" as Rumpelstiltskin.
